About the Department
The department has laboratories as per University norms for hands-on training and is also into research in the vistas of Mechanical engineering showcasing the ability through quality publications jointly with the students & research scholars. All the labs are developed taking into consideration the needs of academia and industry. A huge investment of over a crore is spent on establishing high-profile labs. The department is accredited by the NBA and is thus recognized nationally as one of the youngest departments of the institute to be recognized by National Board of Accreditation (NBA for 3 years in 2018). Also, the department has a recognized R&D center by VTU, Belagavi. The Department has funded projects from national funding bodies contributing to significant improvements in the learning environment.
The Department has been arranging internships for students in various reputed industries and research organizations to enhance their knowledge of applied /advanced technology. The department has numerous MOUs with various industries ranging from Technical Training Establishments to manufacturing industries for transfer of knowledge. The department also has a membership in professional bodies such as SAE, ISTE& so on, through student chapters in the campus bridging the gap between industry and academia. The Mechanical Department has a Student forum -“MECHISTA” under which various technical and societal activities are conducted on are regular basis, where students are trained and supported for technical competitions like SAE AERO and SAE BAJA etc.
In a nutshell, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been regularly conducting events such as Internship Programmes, Technical Talks by experts, Department Forum, Industrial Visit, Entrepreneurship Development Programme and Training on modeling, soft skill Training, ECO Kart, and AERO Club under the banner of SAE India.

Dr Jayatirtha M Patil, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, received his doctoral degree from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi in the year 2023. Confer his M. Tech. programme in Product Design and Manufacturing in the year 2013 from BMSCE Bengaluru, affiliated to VTU Belagavi. Graduated BE in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1998 from BLDEA’S College of Engineering Bijapur, affiliated with Karnataka University Dharwad. Served in the Chemical Industry for 5 years and 19 years of academic experience. He has published 5 research journals national and international in the area of Metal Matrix Composite. He has a lifetime membership in the ISTE- Chapter and also in the SAE student chapter. Functioning as Programme Coordinator of the National Service Scheme for the past 15 years addressing social and societal needs towards nation-building.

Team Garuthmaan, representing Jyothy Institute of Technology, achieved a remarkable milestone by participating in the prestigious SAE International Aero Design Series West 2019 held in the United States of America. This globally recognized competition challenges engineering students to design, build, and demonstrate the performance of radio-controlled aircraft, testing their technical knowledge, innovation, and teamwork under real-world constraints.
Competing against top universities from around the world, Team Garuthmaan delivered an outstanding performance. They secured the 1st position among all participating teams from India, showcasing their dominance at the national level, and achieved an impressive 5th position globally, placing them among the elite teams in the competition. Their success reflects a high level of dedication, engineering excellence, and meticulous design and testing.
Team Garuthmaan, representing Jyothy Institute of Technology, proudly participated in the esteemed SAE International Aero Design Series West 2018 held in the United States of America. This international competition is known for bringing together some of the brightest engineering students from across the globe to design, build, and demonstrate high-performance radio-controlled aircraft under rigorous technical and operational constraints.
Demonstrating exceptional engineering skills, innovation, and teamwork, Team Garuthmaan achieved a significant milestone by securing the 1st position among all Indian teams, making them the top-performing team in the country. On the global stage, they earned an impressive 5th position worldwide, reflecting their ability to compete with leading institutions from around the world.
Under the mentorship of Gurumurthy M, students actively participated in the VTU Youth Fest 2025, an annual celebration that encapsulates the spirit, creativity, and innovation of student life. Over the years, the fest has evolved into a vibrant platform where students from diverse disciplines come together to showcase their talents, compete in various events, collaborate with peers, and create memorable experiences.
The 2025 edition of the fest was hosted at Global Academy of Technology, Bengaluru, and witnessed enthusiastic participation from numerous colleges affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University. Demonstrating exceptional talent, teamwork, and dedication, the students delivered an impressive performance and secured the Overall 10th position across the university colleges.
Under the Mentorship of Mr. Rakesh P, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Students participated in “ELECTRA SAEINDIA,” held at Chennai, which is an Electric All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) – building Competition organized by SAEINDIA, which aims at Technology exploration & evaluation for the students of the Engineering Institutes all over India. This event provides a real-world engineering challenge for the SAEINDIA Student members that reflect the steps involved in the entire process from design and engineering to production to marketing and endurance for an Electric vehicle (two-seater, four-wheeled vehicle). Team Jyothy AURA and Team Vidyuth Jyothy had participated in the competition and secured 5th and 6th position, respectively.
Idea Pitch Competition was organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dayananda Sagar Academy of Technology and Management (DSATM), Bengaluru. A total of 20 teams participated in the event, showcasing a wide range of innovative and competitive ideas.
Our team “VECTOR DYNAMICS”, participated under the guidance of Dr. H. R. Aniruddha Ram. The project presented was “Design and Structural Analysis of a Unique High-Strength Bicycle Frame.” The primary objective of the design was to create a bicycle frame that is lightweight, cost-effective, and highly durable, meeting the dual requirements of performance and affordability.Amidst fierce competition, our team delivered an excellent performance and secured 2nd Place in the competition. The achievement was further recognized with a cash prize of ₹4,000/-.
Rakesh B K, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, along with his team of students, has been recognized and awarded funding by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology under the prestigious Student Project Programme SPP-47 series.
Their innovative project titled “Laser Engraving Machine” was selected as part of this program, which aims to encourage research, creativity, and practical problem-solving among engineering students across the state. The project demonstrates the team’s technical expertise and commitment to developing cost-effective and efficient engineering solutions with real-world applications.

Design Laboratory
The Design Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department provides students with hands-on experience in applying engineering design principles to real-world mechanical components and systems. Energy Conversion Laboratory
The Energy Conversion Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department provides students with practical exposure to the principles of energy generation, transformation, and utilization. The laboratory is equipped with experimental setups that help students study the performance and characteristics of electrical machines and energy conversion systems. Through hands-on experiments, students gain a deeper understanding of concepts such as electromechanical energy conversion, efficiency analysis, power measurement, and machine characteristics. This laboratory enables students to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications, enhancing their analytical skills and understanding of modern energy systems.
Heat & Mass Transfer Laboratory
The Heat and Mass Transfer Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department provides practical understanding of the fundamental principles of heat transfer and mass transfer. The laboratory is equipped with experimental setups that demonstrate different modes of heat transfer such as conduction, convection, and radiation, along with mass diffusion processes. Through hands-on experiments, students analyze heat transfer coefficients, temperature distribution, and thermal performance of various systems. This laboratory helps students connect theoretical concepts with real-world thermal applications and develop strong analytical and experimental skills in thermal engineering.
Energy Conversion Laboratory
The Energy Conversion Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department provides students with practical knowledge of how energy is transformed from one form to another in engineering systems. The laboratory includes experimental setups to study devices such as motors, generators, transformers, and other energy conversion equipment. Through hands-on experiments, students analyze performance characteristics, efficiency, power output, and energy losses in different systems. Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
The Fluid Mechanics Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department provides students with practical exposure to the fundamental principles of fluid flow and its applications. The laboratory is equipped with experimental setups to study concepts such as fluid properties, flow measurement, pressure distribution, and energy losses in pipes and channels. Through hands-on experiments, students analyze the behavior of fluids under different conditions and verify theoretical laws related to fluid motion. The purpose of an internship is to develop professional skills in a hands-on environment.
